Drama

Denzel Washington and Diahann Carroll star in Lorraine Hansberry's classic drama about the divergent dreams and conflicts within three generations of the Younger family.

This American classic tells the story of an inner-city African-American family trying to buy a house in a predominantly white Chicago neighborhood. They discover that their fight against the racists in the neighborhood demands a greater commitment than they realized.

Notes From James:

Tony And Oscar Winner Denzel Washington To Return To Broadway Next Spring In A New Revival Of A Raisin In The Sun

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't A Raisin In The Sun just on Broadway? Yes I know it was over nine years ago. Trust me. I'm not complaining. Any chance to see my favorite actor on stage is fine by me. Now while I did not get the chance to see Mr. Washington is his Tony winning performance three years ago in Fences I did see him in Julius Caesar back in 2005. He did not disappoint.

Hopefully this time around I will be able to get my hands on a ticket. We shall see. Joining him in the show are Tony winners Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls, Caroline or Change) and Diahann Carroll who is making her return to the Broadway stage for the first time in over thirty years. Performances for the show are set to begin at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on March 8 with opening night set for April 3. Now for those of you that are not familiar with the play here is a brief description about A Raisin In The Sun from the show's official website. Enjoy!

Set on Chicago's South Side, A Raisin in the Sun revolves around the divergent dreams and conflicts within three generations of the Younger family: son Walter Lee (Washington), his wife Ruth (Okonedo), his sister Beneatha (Rose), his son Travis and matriarch Lena, called Mama (Carroll). When her deceased husband's money comes through, Mama dreams of moving to a new home and a better neighborhood in Chicago. Walter Lee, a chauffeur, has other plans: buying a liquor store and being his own man. Beneatha dreams of medical school. The tensions and prejudice they face form this seminal American drama."
