Musical

Tony Award winner Sutton Foster stars as Violet, a disfigured young woman on a cross-country journey in search of transformation through faith.

Set in 1964 in the deep South during the early days of the Civil Rights movement, Violet follows the growth and enlightenment of a bitter young woman accidentally scarred by her father. In hopes that a TV evangelist can cure her, she embarks on a journey by bus from her sleepy North Carolina town to Oklahoma. Along the way, she meets a young black soldier who teaches her about beauty, love, courage and what it means to be an outsider.

Tony Winner Sutton Foster To Return To Broadway This Spring In Violet

That's right theatre fans. One of Broadway's most beloved stars is set to return to the Great White Way this Spring. Violet starring two-time Tony Award winner is set to begin previews at the American Airlines Theatre on March 28, 2014 opening night set for April 10, 2014. Now while I've heard of the show before I'll be honest I'm not very familiar with it.

From what I read it first premiered Off-Broadway in 1997 at Playwright's Horizons where it won both the Drama Critic's Award and Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical of the Year. Now for those of you that are like me and not all that familiar with the show here is a synopsis about Violet from the show's official website. Enjoy!

Violet tells the story of a young woman’s quest for beauty amidst the image-obsessed landscape of the 1960s. Facially disfigured in a childhood accident, Violet dreams of a miraculous transformation through the power of faith. Convinced that a televangelist in Oklahoma can heal her, she hops a Greyhound bus and starts the journey of a lifetime.

The show which is scheduled to run thru August 10, 2014 features music by Tony nominee Jeanine Tesori (Shrek, Caroline or Change) and book and lyrics by Brian Crawley. Directing the show is Leigh Silverman (Well, Chinglish) with choreography by Jeffrey Page. Tickets for the show are expected to go on sale in the coming weeks so make sure to check back here when they do. Until next time theatre fans.
