Drama

With disruptions and difficult people surrounding them, can Agnes and Tobias restore balance to their life together? Starring Glenn Close, John Lithgow, Lindsay Duncan, Bob Balaban, Claire Higgins and Martha Plimpton.

Agnes and Tobias, a wealthy middle-aged couple, appear to live in a serene suburban home. But inside, an acerbic nightmare is unfolding. Agnes' alcoholic sister Claire has come to stay, and so has the couple's spoiled daughter Julia, returning home after her fourth failed marriage. Then the neighbors arrive…

Notes from James:

That's right theatre fans. One of Edward Albee's most celebrated plays is returning to the Great White Way in a star studded new production. A Delicate Balance, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1967 in set to begin previews at the Golden Theatre on October 20 with opening night set for November 20. The show which was last seen on Broadway in 1996 where it won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play is being directed by Tony winner Pam MacKinnon (Clybourne Park, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?) and will star Tony winners Glenn Close, John Ligthow, Lindsay Duncan and three-time Tony nominee Martha Plimpton.

Rounding out the cast are Tony and Academy nominee Bob Balaban and Olivier Award winner and Tony nominee Clare Higgins. See? I told you it was star studded. Now even though I was living here during the show's last production I never got around to seeing it. However with a cast like this you can bet I won't make the same mistake twice. Now since I know nothing about the show I have included a brief synopsis of it for you to enjoy as well. So here you go!

The uneasy existence of upper-middle-class suburbanites Agnes (Glenn Close) and Tobias (John Lithgow) and their permanent houseguest, Agnes' witty alcoholic sister Claire (Lindsay Duncan), is disrupted by the sudden appearance of lifelong family friends Harry and Edna (Bob Balaban and Clare Higgins), fellow empty nesters with free-floating anxiety, who ask to stay with them to escape an unnamed terror. They soon are followed by Agnes and Tobias's bitter 36-year-old daughter Julia (Martha Plimpton), who returns home following the collapse of her fourth marriage.

Sounds like quite the comedy right? Well a dark comedy I should say. As of now the show is only scheduled thru February 22, 2015 so make sure you secure your seats to what I am sure is going to be the theatrical event of the season. Get your tickets to see A Delicate Balance on Broadway at the Golden Theatre. Expect the show to be a big hit at next year's Tony Awards. Until next time theatre fans.
